Multivitamins and Minerals

Multivitamins are a combination of different vitamins and minerals. At Manchester pharmacy we provide multivitamins when needed, to help fulfil your everyday demands of nutrition and to get your daily consumption of vitamins and minerals.

If you eat moderately well, a multivitamin may provide some extra nutritional support. If your diet isn’t as good as it should be and you don’t consume a balanced diet that includes fruits and vegetables, a multivitamin will likely be beneficial. On the other hand, it’s important to remember you can’t consume supplements to replace your poor diet choices.

Vitamins fall into two categories:
  • The fat-soluble vitamins
  • The water – soluble vitamins – Vitamin B12 and folate dissolve in water. Your body can’t store these vitamins. Any B or C vitamins your body doesn’t use, travels through your blood stream and is lost when you pee. Most importantly you need a fresh supply of these vitamins every day.

Your body needs large amounts of some minerals, such as calcium, to grow and stay healthy. In addition, minerals such as iron and copper are called trace minerals, your body only requires very little of these.

Your body needs vitamins and minerals to boost your immune system. They help your cells and organs to function properly.

Importance of multivitamins for your health

Healthy adults who eat a balanced diet have no need for a multivitamin. Taking multivitamins daily doesn’t pose much risk to your health whereas some people use them to correct their unhealthy diet which is not recommended. Most health professionals agree that individuals who stay active and have a healthy diet can do more for your mineral and vitamin levels than an inactive lifestyle. Furthermore, multivitamins don’t reduce the risk of any particular diseases, but they can cause more harm than good sometimes if not used appropriately.

Pregnant women receive their vitamins and minerals through a healthy diet. In addition, it’s recommended that you also take a folic acid supplement. It is important to take vitamin D supplements as well. While pregnant you should avoid supplements and multivitamin’s containing vitamin A as a result, too much can affect your baby’s development.
