Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency anaemia can cause a wide range of symptoms. These usually develop gradually, but can worsen if the condition goes untreated.

Manchester pharmacy can discuss how to improve your vitamin B12 naturally or medically.

Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that helps keep your body’s blood and nerve cells healthy. It helps make DNA, the genetic material in all of your cells. Vitamin B12 also helps prevent megaloblastic anaemia, a blood condition that makes people tired and weak. Anaemia is where you have fewer red blood cells than normal, it involves an abnormally low amount of a substance called haemoglobin in each red blood cell.

Some people may be at risk of vitamin B12 if they are on a vegan diet and fail to get enough B12 through food. Some of the symptoms of having a deficiency in vitamin B12 include low moods, difficulty concentrating, pale skin, brittle nails, loss of sensations in the hands and feet and many more. Adults aged 19 to 64 need about 2.4 micrograms a day of vitamin B12.

Anaemia from a B12 deficiency can also cause issues with your nerves. This can happen with or without anaemia. Vitamin B12 helps your body make myelin. That’s a protective layer around the “wires” in your system. It breaks down when you don’t have enough B12, opening your nerve fibers up to damage. Overtime you will experience numbness, this affects your legs first.

To treat a vitamin B12 deficiency you can either change your diet to improve more vitamin B12 by consuming more meat, fish, eggs and other dairy products. If you’re vegan or vegetarian, or looking for alternatives to meat and dairy products, there are other foods you can consume such as cereals and soy or yeast extract products. Either your GP or a pharmacy will provide vitamin B12 tablets if your health has not improved.
