It is possible to check for diseases and conditions using blood tests. Tests can also be used to determine how well your organs are functioning as well as how well your treatments are working. Specifically, blood tests can be used to determine:
  • Examine how well organs like the kidneys, liver, thyroid, and heart are functioning
  • Make sure your medications are working
  • Check your risk factors for heart disease
  • Diseases and conditions such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, anemia, and cardiovascular disease can be identified through diagnosis
  • Test your blood’s ability to clot

During routine checkups, your doctor may recommend blood tests to see how your body is working. Most blood tests do not require special preparation. For some tests, you may need to fast for 8 to 12 hours beforehand whic your Doctor will explain.

In a blood test, a small amount of blood is drawn from your body. A needle is usually used to draw the blood from your arm. A finger prick may also be used.

Blood is drawn and analysed by laboratory (lab) employees. To count blood cells, they can utilise whole blood or separate the blood cells from the fluid that contains them. Plasma or serum is the name for this fluid.

The fluid is used to determine the concentration of various chemicals in the blood. The findings may aid in the early detection of health problems, when therapies or lifestyle adjustments are most effective.

Many diseases and medical problems cannot be diagnosed just by blood tests. Other criteria may be considered by your doctor in order to confirm a diagnosis. Your signs and symptoms, medical history, vital signs (blood pressure, respiration, pulse, and temperature), and ot findings are all examples of these elements.
